The New Teacher Forum helps early career teachers successfully transition into the teaching profession and assists districts in the retention of new teachers by providing the support, knowledge and networks vital to building a professional teaching career. The forum helps bridge the gap between new and experienced teachers by building the confidence, credibility and classroom fundamentals that new teachers need to survive and thrive.

Mission and Goals:
The mission of the forum is to support continuous learning by providing quality professional development in the areas of core content, instructional methodology, and use of modern technology in order to enrich instruction and enhance student achievement.

Forum goals:

  • Establish the confidence, credibility and classroom fundamentals needed to succeed as a new teacher
  • Improve teacher content knowledge
  • Promote quality teaching
  • Enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence
  • Develop pedagogical skills of new career educators
  • Identify resources to support career educators
  • Establish a support network for new career educators

What: The New Teacher Forum is a mentoring and support network that pairs an experienced master teacher with new teachers in their same subject area. The forum will focus on best practices, content enrichment and innovative curriculum development.

Who Should Apply: The New Teacher Forum is a program for early career teachers who have completed no more than 3 years in the classroom.

When and Where: All seminars will be held on the Rice University campus. The forum will consist of nine seminars totaling 33 contact hours.

  • Seminar dates are:
    1. Tuesday, August 11, 2009, 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
    2. Wednesday, August 12, 2009, 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
    3. Monday, September 14, 2009, 4:30–7:30 p.m.
    4. Monday, October, 26, 2009, 4:30–7:30 p.m.
    5. Monday, December 7, 2009, 4:30–7:30 p.m.
    6. Monday, January 11, 2010, 4:30–7:30 p.m.
    7. Monday, February 22, 2010, 4:30–7:30 p.m.
    8. Monday, April 5, 2010, 4:30–7:30 p.m.
    9. Monday, May 17, 2010, 4:30–7:30 p.m.

Tuition: $475 includes 9 seminars (33 contact hours), an online community network, curriculum resources and a seminar binder.

Acknowledgment of enrollment: Once your completed enrollment is received, you will either be enrolled in the course or placed on a waiting list if the course has filled. In either case, you will receive written notification from Rice at your home address within 15 days of receipt of your registration. Please contact our office, 713-348-6031, if you do not receive notification from us. You may need to check with your school or district administrative office to ensure the registration was sent.

Course cancellation policy: Although we make every effort to maintain the published schedule of classes, events such as insufficient enrollment, instructor illness, room conflicts or inclement weather may require a schedule adjustment or cancellation. We will notify registrants of any change in the published information.

Refunds: Program fees will be refunded in full when enrollments are cancelled in writing by June 30, 2009. Refunds for cancellations received July 1 through August 3 will be issued only if a replacement can be found for you, and a 20 percent processing fee will be deducted from your refund. No refunds will be issued after August 3, 2009.

Attendance: Participants are expected to attend all seminars. Satisfactory attendance and participation is required to remain in the program.

Special needs: We make every effort to hold classes in rooms that are accessible to all participants; however, some older buildings cannot be made readily accessible for wheelchairs. If you have any special needs, please contact teachers@rice.edu or 713-348-6031 at least two weeks before the start of your course.
