The Global Education Certificate program is a two-semester, Web-based program designed to provide teachers with a broad field of study that explores the urgent need for global education in schools. Led by master teachers, participants will examine the historical and cultural foundations of issues and events from a global perspective and best practices for incorporating global education into the K-12 curriculum.

Through a critical study of global events, teachers will learn to instill global perspectives into their classrooms and foster a sense of global citizenship and an appreciation of the interdependence of the world’s diverse people among their students.

Why study global education?
In today’s increasingly interconnected world, it has never been more imperative for American schools to incorporate global education into their curriculum. As we prepare students for the global marketplace and for their future roles as global citizens who must confront a host of new challenges, it is critical that students understand other cultures and respect and acknowledge divergent perspectives. Educational reform that encompasses the infusion of global education into the K-12 education system is vital to the health and success of the 21st century global community.

Who should attend?
Teachers who:

  • Are interested in thinking critically about and increasing their content knowledge of pertinent global issues
  • Believe students should understand and embrace their future roles as global leaders and citizens
  • Are committed to infusing global perspectives into K-12 curriculum
  • Want to connect with like-minded educators around the globe

Participant expectations:

  • Commit approximately four hours per week to the course
  • Complete weekly course work, including pertinent readings, assignments, and online participation in webinars, discussion boards and chats

Participation: The program will be both asynchronous and synchronous. Approximately 80 percent of the course will be asynchronous in nature, so participation can take place at times best suited for the individual. Approximately 20 percent of the course will be synchronous (live discussion or webinars) at a specific date and time. Synchronous sessions will be announced in the course syllabus and will take into account time zones and needs of participants wherever possible.

Participants will demonstrate their acquired knowledge through their active involvement with course discussion boards, webinars and live chats. Additionally, they will submit weekly assignments and the capstone project in a timely manner as detailed by the course syllabus.

Participants will receive 36 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits per semester or 3.6 Continuing Education Units (CEU) per semester.
